Information

Ruatoria is located 130 km north of Gisborne on SH35.  You should allow 2.5 hours to drive to Ruatoria.  Places to visit enroute include Tolaga Bay (Wharf), Tokomaru Bay – home of the famous paua pie, Te Puia Springs and then Ruatoria.

Local shops in Ruatoria provide the basics.  The closest beach is Tuparoa, approximately
5 km east of Ruatoria.  It is not a swimming beach and you have to drive down the creek bed to get to the beach, it’s not straight forward if the grader hasn’t been through.  You can also drive up to the foot of Hikurangi, approximately 13km from Ruatoria aerodrome up Tapuaeroa Rd.  Tikitiki Church (St Andrews) is 15 km to the north on SH 35 and is a beautiful tribute to the local people who served in WWI.

What about accommodation?

There is ENZ of the Earth in Ruatoria, motel accommodation at Hicks Bay (Motel), Tokomaru Bay and at the Tolaga Bay Motorcamp.  Another alternative is Te Puia Springs Hotel.

If you are a NZMCA member you can stay here (for a koha) at the aerodrome where it is safe, quiet and secure.  Contact us for more information.
